Asphalt Paving, Sealcoating and Repair in Atlanta

Atlanta's west and southwest sides are full of older homes, and their driveways show it. Census data say about 62 percent of homes in ZIP code 30310 went up before 1970. That ZIP takes in West End and Westview, where older drives tend to crack at the edges and hold water. When water gets under them, the clay below softens and the asphalt breaks up.

Ground Effects Paving is an asphalt paving contractor serving Dallas, Georgia, and Atlanta is part of our service area. Here we pave and repair driveways for homes and parking lots for churches and businesses. Our asphalt driveway paving starts below the surface, with the grade and the stone base. Call or text (770) 940-0861 when you need a paving contractor in Atlanta, and we put the quote in writing.

Older driveways on Atlanta's west and southwest sides

Census data date about 44 percent of homes in ZIP code 30311 to the 1950s and 1960s. Cascade Heights and Venetian Hills sit in that ZIP. Closer in, the federal soil survey maps nearly all of West End and Mozley Park as Urban land. The survey names no natural soil there.

Under an old drive there, the ground may be old fill rather than clay. Part of our look at the job is judging whether the base is still sound. When it is, asphalt repair and patching or an overlay can give the drive more life. When it is not, patching only buys time, and the drive needs a rebuild from the stone up.

Atlanta is still growing, and the Census estimated 529,110 residents in 2025, up from 498,715 in the 2020 count. Around Ben Hill and Greenbriar, about 40 percent of homes in ZIP code 30331 went up in 2000 or later. Newer drives there mostly need upkeep: crack filling first, then sealcoating.

What red clay and Atlanta rain do to asphalt

Where the soil survey still names a natural soil in southwest Atlanta, the Cecil and Rion soils come up often. NRCS, which runs that survey, describes the Cecil subsoil as sticky, plastic red clay. Its rating for local roads flags Cecil for low strength, so a thin base over it ruts and cracks.

The ground is rarely flat, either. The soil survey maps much of Collier Heights on 10 to 25 percent slopes. Parts of Adamsville and Westview sit on the same steep ground. On a slope, rain runs down the drive and cuts under the edges.

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give Atlanta's airport gauge about 50 inches of rain a year. Every month averages more than 3 inches, so there is no real dry season. About 15 days a year bring an inch or more. That is why we set the grade and the drainage before any asphalt goes down.

Church and business lots along Campbellton Road and Hollowell Parkway

On Atlanta's west and southwest sides, church and business lots line a few long roads. Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway carries US 78, and much of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is GA 139. Campbellton Road and Cascade Road run southwest to the city limits and beyond.

A busy lot takes more wear than a driveway. Delivery trucks and full Sunday lots load the pavement, and standing water finds every low spot. Our parking lot paving starts with the grade and the drainage, then the base and the asphalt. We plan the work in sections so a church or a business can stay open.

A sound lot needs sealcoating and fresh striping from time to time. A restripe is laid out to the federal accessible-parking rules. Older city stormwater guidance for small commercial sites treats an overlay of existing pavement differently from new paving. Ask the Department of Watershed Management how it reads your lot first.

Some Atlanta jobs are private drives or gravel. Our road paving covers shared private drives with the same grade and base work. For gravel drives and pads, our stone hauling and gravel delivery brings crusher run in our own dump trucks.

Who signs off on driveway work in the City of Atlanta?

That depends on where the work sits. The apron and the sidewalk at the street are public right of way. ATLDOT, the city's transportation department, issues the permit for work there and lists driveway apron repairs as an example.

Some city streets are also state routes, like GA 139 on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. On state routes, GDOT requires its own permit to widen or move a driveway in the state right of way.

West End and Collier Heights are two of the city's historic districts. If your home sits in one, ask the city's historic preservation staff before you change the driveway.

Georgia law requires a Georgia 811 locate request before machine digging or grading. Georgia 811 asks for it at least three business days ahead. The city and the state answer the permit questions, and we point you to the right office.

Questions We Hear Around Atlanta

A few of the questions we hear most around Atlanta. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (770) 940-0861

Is Atlanta part of your service area?
Yes. Atlanta is part of our service area, from intown neighborhoods to Ben Hill and Adamsville on the southwest side. We pave and repair driveways and parking lots across the city. Call or text (770) 940-0861 to set up a look at the job.
What does it cost to pave a driveway in Atlanta?
It depends on the drive, so we price it after we look at the job. Size and the tear-out of the old drive come first, then the grading and base the red clay calls for. Apron work at the street, or stormwater measures the city requires, can add to it. We put the quote in writing before any work starts.
Does Atlanta's stormwater ordinance apply to a new driveway?
It can, because the Department of Watershed Management's guidance for single-family homes counts asphalt as impervious surface. Work that creates or replaces more than 500 square feet of it can require on-site stormwater measures. A drive 12 feet wide or less may drain as sheet flow to a lawn at least twice as wide. Parking pads do not get that option, and the department decides how a job is classed.
Can a church or business lot in Atlanta stay open while you pave?
Usually, yes. We plan the paving in sections, so part of the lot stays open while the rest is worked. Fresh asphalt and new sealer need time before traffic goes back on, and we tell you when it is ready.
