Concrete that ties into the asphalt around it

Ground Effects Paving does concrete work for homes and businesses in Dallas and the towns around it. We pour concrete sidewalks and walkways, plus small concrete driveways for homes. For businesses, we pour the concrete approach that carries traffic from the street into the lot. Every job starts with the grade, so water runs off the finished concrete.

Ground Effects is a paving contractor in Dallas, so the concrete and the asphalt can be one job. A new lot may need a concrete approach at the street and a sidewalk along the building. A home may pair a concrete walkway with a new asphalt driveway. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.

  • Walkways from the driveway to the front door
  • Small concrete driveways for homes
  • Commercial approaches and aprons from the street into a lot
  • Grade work and a compacted base before the forms go in
  • Forms set to a slope so rain runs off
  • Control joints laid out so cracking follows the joint lines
  • Concrete planned with the asphalt on the same job

Concrete sidewalks and walkways for homes and businesses

A concrete sidewalk starts with the layout and the grade. Paulding County averages about 53 inches of rain a year, so each walk gets a slope that sheds water. We set the line and the height, then dig out and compact the ground. Forms go in next, then the concrete, which gets leveled and finished.

Joints go in within hours of the pour. The concrete industry's own guidance runs saw cuts 4 to 12 hours after finishing. Each joint goes at least a quarter of the way through the concrete. The guidance keeps panels close to square, no longer than one and a half times their width.

Before any machine digging or grading, Georgia law calls for a Georgia 811 locate request. Georgia 811 asks for it at least three business days ahead.

What goes into a small concrete driveway?

A small concrete driveway is only as good as the ground under it. Around Dallas, most upland ground is well drained loamy soil on rolling to steep slopes. We grade and compact it, then set the base the soil calls for. The forms set the edges and the slope, so water runs away from the house.

The concrete industry's joint guidance ties spacing to the thickness of the concrete. Its example is concrete 4 inches thick, with joints about 10 feet apart. It caps the spacing at 15 feet. Where the driveway meets a walk or the garage floor, an isolation joint lets each piece move on its own.

The industry's curing guidance keeps new concrete wet or sealed for at least several days after finishing. Cold slows the strength gain, and the weather station near Dallas averages about 73 freezing nights a year. The same guidance calls for keeping new concrete from freezing while it gains early strength.

Commercial concrete approaches and aprons around Dallas and Paulding County

A commercial approach is the concrete entrance from the street into a lot. Every car and delivery truck that turns in crosses it, so it gets planned with the lot. When the job includes paving the parking lot, the approach and the asphalt get graded together.

GDOT, the Georgia Department of Transportation, oversees the state routes. In Paulding County, those include US 278, GA 61, GA 92 and GA 120. A new approach on one needs a GDOT permit before any work starts in the right of way. GDOT takes that application from the property owner or the company that owns or leases the property.

In unincorporated Paulding County, a driveway onto a county road takes a permit from the county DOT. It issues the driveway permit and a right-of-way encroachment permit. The county does not maintain streets inside Dallas city limits, so ask the city about those. We point you to the right office for your address.

FAQ

Concrete Work Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete work around Dallas and the west side of metro Atlanta. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (770) 940-0861

How much does concrete work cost?
Size and thickness drive most of the price. The grade work and the base the ground needs move it too, and so does access for the concrete truck. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Can you put the approach at our business in concrete?
Yes. We take out the old surface and fix the grade and the base. Then the approach goes back in concrete. When it sits on a state route, that work waits on a GDOT permit.
Should my driveway be concrete or asphalt?
Both work when the base and the drainage are right. We pave asphalt driveways and pour small concrete ones. The choice comes down to the look you want and how the drive gets used. Our guide to asphalt and concrete driveways in Georgia lays out the trade-offs.
Why does concrete crack, and what do the joints do?
Concrete expands and shrinks as moisture and temperature change, and as it dries, it shrinks. The concrete industry's own guidance says cracks cannot be prevented entirely. Joints are planned cracks that control where they form. A crack that runs along a joint is the joint doing its job.
How soon can we walk or drive on new concrete?
New concrete gains strength as it cures, so you can walk on it well before you can drive on it. The mix and the weather move the timing, so we give you the dates for your pour.
Do you do concrete work outside Dallas?
Yes. Dallas sits at the center of our service area, which covers the west side of metro Atlanta. That takes in towns like Hiram, Powder Springs, Douglasville and Marietta, plus Atlanta itself. Call or text (770) 940-0861 with the address of the job.
