Fix the base first, then patch the asphalt

Potholes and spreading cracks let rain soak into the ground under your asphalt. Ground Effects Paving does asphalt repair and patching for driveways and parking lots across Dallas, GA and west metro Atlanta. We find out why the asphalt failed and fix that first, then patch with hot mix asphalt.

Ground Effects is an asphalt paving company serving Dallas, GA, so repairs get the same materials as new paving. When a patch needs new base, we haul the stone in our own dump trucks. Call or text (770) 940-0861, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Pothole Repair and Asphalt Patching From the Base Up

Most potholes start where water and traffic find a weak spot. Rain gets in through cracks and softens the base, and tires break the surface loose. Cold patch from a bag fills the hole for a while. State highway guidelines call that a temporary repair.

We cut the broken asphalt back to solid pavement with square edges. Wet or soft base comes out until we reach firm ground, and new stone base goes in packed tight. Georgia's dig law counts machine digging into the ground below the pavement as excavating. That work waits for a Georgia 811 locate request and the utility marks.

The cut edges get a tack coat, a sticky asphalt layer that helps the patch stick to the old asphalt. Hot mix asphalt fills the hole and gets compacted flush with the surface around it. A patch that sits level lets rain run off.

Asphalt Crack Repair and Drainage Fixes Around Dallas

Water is behind a lot of cracked and broken asphalt, and Dallas gets plenty of it. A NOAA weather station northeast of town averages about 54 inches of rain a year, spread across every month. Rain that sits on the asphalt or runs under its edges softens the base below.

Alligator cracking is an area of small, connected cracks that look like alligator skin. It usually means the base under the asphalt stayed wet and gave out. That area comes out and gets rebuilt from the base up. A single narrow crack can be filled to keep rain out of the base.

A downspout aimed at the driveway or a low spot that holds puddles can keep one area wet. We fix the water problem before we patch. That can mean regrading the area or turning runoff away from the asphalt. The new patch then sits on firm, dry base.

Driveway Repair or Replacement: Which One Fits?

A repair makes sense when the damage sits in a few spots and the rest of the asphalt is sound. Patching those spots is a much smaller job than paving the whole driveway. When failed spots sit close together, one larger patch is often the cleaner repair.

If the surface is worn but the base still holds, asphalt resurfacing adds a new layer over it. When alligator cracks and soft spots cover most of the driveway, the base under it has failed. Then asphalt driveway paving from the ground up is usually the better choice.

Parking lots follow the same logic. A lot that has failed across most of its surface needs a full parking lot re-pave. We look at the job and tell you which one it needs. Then we put the quote in writing.

FAQ

Asphalt Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about asphalt repair around Dallas and the west side of metro Atlanta. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

How much does asphalt repair cost?
The price depends on the size of each failed area and how deep the damage goes. A soft base that has to come out adds work, and so does a drainage fix. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts. Call or text (770) 940-0861 to set that up.
Why did my last pothole patch fail?
Patches often fail when the cause underneath was never fixed. If the base stays wet or soft, the new asphalt breaks up the same way the old asphalt did. The patch material matters too, and federal highway guidance counts hot mix asphalt as a preferred choice. We fix the base and the water first, then patch with hot mix.
Should I fill cracks before they turn into potholes?
Yes. Filling a crack while it is narrow keeps rain out of the base, and wet base is where potholes start. Cracks that have spread into an alligator pattern need a patch instead. Crack filling is also the first step before driveway sealcoating.
Can you fix the crumbling edges of my driveway?
Yes. Edges crumble when the dirt along the side wears or washes away, and tires then break off the unsupported asphalt. We cut back to solid asphalt and rebuild the base under the edge. After we pave it again, we fill the side back in so the edge has support.
What causes a sunken spot in my driveway?
A sunken spot usually means the ground under it settled, or loads were heavier than the asphalt was built for. Water then pools in the low spot and speeds up the damage. We dig out the weak material and rebuild the base. Then we patch the area back level with the driveway around it.
Do I need a permit to repair my driveway?
Your city or county decides which paving work needs a permit, so ask the office for your address first. Work where the driveway meets the street can need a right-of-way permit. Atlanta requires one for driveway apron repairs, and on a state route that permit comes from GDOT.
