Asphalt or Concrete Driveway: Which Is Better in Georgia?

Asphalt is usually the better pick when the drive is long or the up-front cost matters most. Concrete is the better pick when you want the longest life and a surface that stays firm in Georgia heat. Asphalt also takes a car within days, while concrete needs about a week.

Head to head, national cost guides price asphalt below concrete. One lists asphalt at $6 to $9 per square foot installed and basic concrete at $8 to $15. Those are market numbers, not our price list. If asphalt suits your lot, our page on asphalt driveway paving covers how we build one.

How do asphalt and concrete driveways compare?

Cost and life figures come from national cost guides. Care and curing figures come from trade guides.

What does each driveway cost in Georgia?

A second guide lists asphalt at $5 to $15 and concrete at $8 to $18. The ranges overlap, and some guides start plain concrete near $4 a square foot.

Each job’s own site work moves the price. Removal of an old drive, grading, base stone and truck access count for both.

Size matters most, since both are priced by the square foot. The gap grows on a long drive.

Asphalt prices also follow oil. Georgia DOT tracks liquid asphalt, the binder in the mix, in a monthly index. It rose from $566 a ton in January 2026 to $700 in November.

How long does each driveway last?

National guides give asphalt about 20 to 30 years with upkeep and concrete about 30 to 50 years. A state asphalt association’s driveway guide is more cautious. It says a well-built, well-kept drive can serve up to 20 years with little trouble. These figures assume a sound base and water that drains away.

How does each one handle Georgia heat and cold?

NOAA’s station northeast of Dallas averages about 55 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. Most of those days fall from June through August.

The glue in asphalt softens in heat and firms up as it cools, a paving trade group’s care sheet says. New asphalt needs the most care. Set kickstands and trailer jacks on a board or pad. Avoid turning the wheel while the car sits still, which can scuff the surface.

Concrete does not soften in heat, and its light color stays cooler underfoot. Its risk comes on pour day. Hot weather dries a fresh slab fast, which the concrete industry warns can cause early surface cracks. Curing then keeps the slab damp or under a curing compound for about 3 to 7 days.

Winter cuts the other way. The same station logs about 73 freezing nights a year, most from December to February. National guides rate asphalt better in the cold, and one warns that deicing salt can harm a concrete finish. Fresh concrete also needs about two days of protection from freezing, the concrete industry says.

How do heavy rain and red clay affect each driveway?

The same station averages about 54 inches of rain a year, and about 16 days bring an inch or more. The national asphalt trade association calls standing water the leading cause of driveway failure. The state association’s guide calls for a slope of at least a quarter inch per foot so water runs off. Where a low spot cannot drain, it says to build up the ground and add drain pipe under it.

NRCS soil maps rank the Madison and Pacolet series among the most common soils west of Atlanta. Both have a red clay subsoil. Topsoil and roots come out first, then the ground is compacted.

Where the ground gives poor support, the state association’s guide calls for a thicker stone base. On our asphalt driveways, we do the grading and haul the base stone in our own dump trucks.

Asphalt flexes, so it can ride over minor settling without abrupt bumps. Concrete is rigid. A university extension guide warns that a slab over soft spots bridges them and cracks under heavy traffic.

What upkeep does each one need?

Asphalt trade guides say to let a new driveway cure for weeks to months before its first sealcoat. After that, the state association’s guide calls for sealer every two to five years. We fill cracks before the sealer goes on, and a fresh coat also improves the look. The driveway sealcoating page covers timing in this climate.

Gas and motor oil dissolve the glue in asphalt, so clean up spills fast. Concrete needs less routine care, and sealer is optional. Some guides suggest a sealer every few years to resist stains, which show more on a light surface.

Which driveway is easier to repair?

Asphalt is the easier one to fix, and its patches show less, national guides say. A sound asphalt drive can also take an overlay, a new layer about 1.5 to 2 inches thick. Weak spots and large cracks get cut out and patched first. See asphalt repair and patching for that work.

Concrete repairs are harder to hide, since new concrete is hard to match to an older slab. Bigger damage often means replacing a whole section. One national guide puts the average asphalt repair near $750 and the average concrete repair near $1,250.

How soon can you drive on each one?

New asphalt can carry a car after a few days, and many pavers say to wait about 72 hours. The state association’s guide also warns against letting a heavy moving truck onto a fresh drive.

Concrete takes longer. Concrete guides say to wait 24 to 48 hours to walk on it. A car waits about seven days, and heavy trucks wait about 28. At seven days, the slab has reached about 70 percent of its strength.

Ready to price your driveway?

Asphalt fits long drives and a quick return to use. Concrete fits shorter drives where the longest life matters most. Either way, Georgia law requires a Georgia 811 locate request before machines dig or grade. Many towns and counties west of Atlanta also review new or wider driveways, so ask the office for your address.

Frequently asked questions

Is an asphalt or a concrete driveway less expensive?
Asphalt usually costs less to install. In one national cost guide, asphalt runs $6 to $9 per square foot and basic concrete $8 to $15. On a long drive, that gap adds up.
Which lasts longer, an asphalt or a concrete driveway?
National guides give concrete about 30 to 50 years and asphalt about 20 to 30 years with upkeep. Both figures assume a sound base and good drainage. Skipped sealcoating and repairs can wear an asphalt drive out much sooner.
Which driveway handles Georgia summer heat better?
Concrete does, because it does not soften in heat and its light color stays cooler. Asphalt softens on hot days, most when it is new, so set kickstands and trailer jacks on a board. Winter favors asphalt, which national guides rate better in the cold.
How soon can I drive on a new driveway?
Many pavers say to give new asphalt about 72 hours before you drive on it. Concrete guides say a car waits about seven days, and heavy trucks wait about 28 days.
Does red clay matter for a new driveway?
Yes, for both kinds. The topsoil and roots come out, and the clay below gets compacted. Where the ground gives poor support, an asphalt trade guide calls for a thicker stone base. Asphalt flexes over minor settling, while concrete needs even support to limit cracks.
How often does each driveway need sealing?
Trade guides say to let new asphalt cure for weeks to months before its first sealcoat. After that, a state asphalt association's guide calls for sealer every two to five years. Sealer on concrete is optional, and some guides suggest it every few years to resist stains.
Is this what Ground Effects Paving charges?
No. The ranges in this guide are market numbers from national cost guides, not our price list. We look at your driveway and put the quote in writing. Call or text (770) 940-0861.
